Root canal treatment in Antalya.

When the nerve inside a tooth is infected or dying, root canal treatment removes it, disinfects the canal system and seals it. The point is simple: keeping your own tooth is almost always better than replacing it.

When it is needed

Deep decay, a crack, or an old trauma can let bacteria reach the pulp — the nerve and blood supply inside the tooth. The signs range from lingering sensitivity to hot and cold, to pain on biting, to swelling. Sometimes there are no symptoms at all and it shows up on an X-ray.

The alternative to root canal treatment is usually extraction, followed by an implant or a bridge. Both are good treatments; neither is as good as the tooth you already have.

What the appointment involves

  1. Anaesthesia and isolationThe tooth is numbed and isolated with a rubber dam, which keeps saliva — and its bacteria — out of the canal system.
  2. Cleaning and shapingThe pulp is removed and the canals are cleaned with fine instruments and irrigants. Under magnification, additional canals that are easy to miss with the naked eye can be located.
  3. SealingThe canals are filled and sealed so bacteria cannot re-colonise them.
  4. RestoringA back tooth that has been root-treated is more brittle and usually needs a crown to keep it from splitting. That step is part of the treatment, not an extra.
What the published evidence says Where a previous root canal treatment has failed and surgery is required, a systematic review and meta-analysis of prospective studies and randomised trials reported a pooled success rate of 91.3% in randomised trials and 78.4% in prospective studies for endodontic microsurgery, with survival between 79% and 100% over follow-up of 2 to 13 years. Outcomes were better when the work was performed with magnification by trained clinicians — one of the reasons this practice uses an operating microscope. Afterwards

Mild tenderness to biting for a few days is normal. The tooth then needs its permanent restoration promptly — a temporary filling left in place for months is how successfully treated teeth are eventually lost.

If you are travelling

Root canal treatment is frequently the unglamorous part of a larger plan: the tooth has to be sound before it can carry a crown or anchor a bridge. It is usually completed at the start of a treatment week so the restoration can follow in the same trip.

About timings Every figure on this page is a typical range drawn from routine cases. Your own schedule depends on bone quality, gum health, how many teeth are involved and how your body heals — it is assessed and decided by Dt. Koyuncu after a clinical examination, and adjusted if your case asks for it.

Questions patients ask

Is it painful?
The treatment is done under local anaesthetic and is generally no more uncomfortable than a filling. What hurts is the infection beforehand — which is why leaving it alone is the painful option.
One visit or two?
Straightforward cases are often completed in one. An actively infected tooth may be dressed and left for a period before sealing. The decision is clinical and is explained to you at the appointment.
Do I definitely need a crown afterwards?
On back teeth, usually yes — they take the heaviest chewing load and a root-treated tooth is more brittle. Front teeth with a small access cavity can sometimes be restored with a bonded filling alone.
